The Centre of Vilnius and Kaunas Region
Elektrenai is the geographical centre of Vilnius and Kaunas Region, strongly influenced by the prospective development of the two cities. Elektrenai derives its name from the word “electricity”. It is a relatively new city, established in the second half of the 20th century after a power plant was built in the area. The city’s business potential is rapidly growing. Due to the expansion of Vilnius and Kaunas Region, the territory around Vilnius–Kaunas Highway is becoming an attractive spot for large business sites. A major transport hub is projected in the vicinity of Elektrenai. Territories located a bit more distant from the highway are designed for industrial development. The city surroundings are perfect for recreational projects. Elektrenai is characterised by rich landscape: forests,
hills, waters.
Economic Environment and Key Investment Directions
Elektrenai is inhabited by 14,000 people. The city’s industry is driven by the sectors of electric energy production, wood processing, furniture production, and food. At the end of 2005, the unemployment level was only 1.3 percent. Plans are to expand the Elektrenai Recreational Tourist Zone by 2010, i.e. to construct a modern Youth Coast and Sports Complex, Energoland Entertainment Park. The complex will be composed of roller coasters and reconstructed existing sites – ice palace, swimming pool, and yacht club. Hotels, campsites, restaurants and cafes will settle around the new complex. The project calls for € 110 mln. in investments.
