Vilnius

Vilnius is the capital of the Republic of Lithuania and the largest administrative centre in Lithuania with all major political, economic, social and cultural centres. “City of the Future” of Eastern Europe and Baltic States, Vilnius was the official European Capital of Culture in the year 2009. It is also the first city in Eastern Europe and the Baltic States to attain such a rank. Vilnius is one of the most rapidly expanding cities in the region in the economic sense. Of all Lithuanian cities, Vilnius is developing and renewing the most rapidly. Vilnius County generates one-third of the country’s GDP. In 2009, Vilnius accumulated € 6,140,000 in direct foreign investments (FDI).

The new business city center on the right bank of the river Neris is notable for its skyscrapers, modern venues, and the rhythm of true modern city life. Orderly and modern, Vilnius showed its potential by expanding rapidly from the year 2000. Now, of course, as the global economy faces new challenges, the unlimited expansion will be replaced with reasonable growth. Still, as businesses demand more space, new office buildings are being built in Vilnius, and the expansion does not appear to be ending soon.

The capital remains open to different cultures and ideas, just as it has been throughout its history. The dynamic city is renewing every day. Vilnius preserves the old tradition of European culture, reinterpreting it and turning it into a new creative force. Vilnius is home to 554,000 inhabitants and this number is growing every year. Approximately 1.5 million tourists visited Vilnius in 2009. More and more people are discovering and falling in love with the capital of Lithuania.
